UN Security Council Adopts Resolution Encouraging “all necessary measures” Against Islamic State

By

The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution, calling on member states to “eradicate the safe haven” that Islamic State and other extremist militant groups have established over parts of Syria and Iraq.

The document emphasizes that nations should “redouble and co-ordinate their efforts to prevent and suppress terrorist attacks” and compels them to “take all necessary measures” in the struggle against IS.

However, it does not invoke the UN’s Chapter VII, which provides specific legal consent for the use of force.
