Peoples’ Privacy at Risk if U.S. Government Wins Apple Feud

The multinational tech company Apple is engaged in a feud with the FBI about whether it should be forced to unlock a phone used by one of the gunmen involved in the terrorist attack on San Bernardino, California in December last year.

If the United States government wins, then it could have massive repercussions for the privacy of ordinary citizens, Judge James Orenstein said in a similar, albeit unrelated, case between Apple and law enforcement. It would pave the way for a “virtually limitless expansion of the government’s legal authority to surreptitiously intrude on personal privacy”, Orenstein stated in his recent ruling.
