Kenya Contemplates Departure from ICC

By

In a speech earlier this week, President Uhuru Kenyatta, said that Kenya will have to think carefully about its membership of the International Criminal Court.

The President stated in his address that “We have sought the changes that will align the ICC to respect national sovereignty. Those changes have not been forthcoming. We will therefore need to give serious thought to our membership.” He referred to the ICC as a “tool of global power politics”.

Other African countries to have notified the United Nations of their intention to withdraw from the Rome Statute include South Africa, Burundi and The Gambia.
