Jens Dieckmann Invited to Roundtable Debate on the Implementation of the ICC Rome Statute into Ukrainian Legislation

By

Lawyer and Associate Member of 9 Bedford Row International, Jens Dieckmann, has been invited by the Ukrainian Human Rights NGO ‘Center for Civil Liberites’ to participate in a high-level roundtable discussion on the “Implementation of International Humanitarian Law and the Rome Statute of the ICC into Ukrainian Legislation”. The event will be held on July 13th 2016 in Kiev, Ukraine.

The purpose of this debate is to assess the obstacles in existing Ukrainian legislation that hinder the prosecution of international crimes. Specifically, the Criminal Code of Ukraine does not contain liability for crimes against humanity, while provisions on the crime of aggression, war crimes, and genocide do not fully reflect the requirements of current international criminal law.

The Center for Civil Liberties has initiated the preparation of the respective draft law, which will be debated with representatives from the Ukrainian Government, members of parliament, international law experts and civil society at the roundtable discussion.
