Hissene Habre Convicted of Crimes Against Humanity and Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

The former ruler of Chad, Hissene Habre, has been convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment. The convictions include rape, sexual slavery and ordering the killings of 40,000 people during the course of his rule, which lasted for eight years from 1982 – 1990.

The landmark trial took place in Senegal and Habre has been allocated 15 days to appeal. This occasion marks the first time that a court backed by the African Union has put an ex-ruler on trial for committing human rights abuses and serious crimes.
