First Cultural Destruction Case to Begin at the ICC

Tomorrow sees the start of a two day confirmation of charges hearing before the International Criminal Court in relation to the destruction of cultural monuments.

Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi (pictured), a jihadi leader, is accused of destroying medieval shrines, tombs of Sufi saints and a mosque dating back to the 15th Century that were a part of the UNESCO world heritage site in the Malian city of Timbuktu.
