Ex-Judge to Lead UN Team Investigating Serious Crimes in Syria

By

On Monday 3rd of July, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, appointed ex-Judge Catherine Marchi-Uhel to lead a new UN team that has been set up to investigate serious crimes which have taken place in Syria.

Originating in December 2016, the team is being called the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism. The aim of the group is to collect, preserve and analyze potential evidence for use in courts, either now or in the future, that may have a mandate over the offences which are said to have taken place since 2011. Additionally, the unit will also prepare files on specific individuals in order to facilitate criminal proceedings.

The creation of the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism is being viewed as a small but vital step in the efforts being made to achieve justice in Syria. Under Marchi-Uhel’s leadership the team can further contribute to these attempts which Sweden, France and Germany have also been a part of.
