European Union foreign ministers have stated that Russia’s military action in Syria is of “deep concern and must cease immediately”. The EU has warned Russia that its attacks against Islamic State risk protracting the four-and-a-half-year civil war in the country. There are also fears that Russia’s intervention will undermine the political process that hopes to bring the fighting to an end.
