A Sri Lankan panel of the Consultation Task Force on Reconciliation Mechanisms has advised that a hybrid court made up of local and international judges should be formed in order to oversee the adjudication of alleged war crimes from the Sri Lankan civil war. The fighting took place between the government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and lasted from 1983-2009.
In 2015, the United Nations Human Right Commissioner urged Sri Lanka to establish a hybrid court and has been consistently calling on the government to increase and improve accountability and reconciliation mechanisms within the country. President Sirisena has since rejected the concept of international involvement in any domestic probe into alleged war crimes. He has yet to respond to the government appointed panel’s recommendation.
