A UN report has estimated that by 2050, around 310 million girls in Africa will be married before they reach officially adulthood at 18 years old. To prevent this, the African Union has stated that it wants to end child marriage.
Getting married before 18 years of age is already illegal in most African countries. However, despite these laws in certain States, the UN estimates that over 125 million African women and girls alive today were married before turning 18.
Experts claim that most of them were given to men in traditional or religious unions that are considered to be against the law.
