From the 10th-11th January 2019, the University of Leeds will be hosting a law conference on ‘Cosmopolitan Pluralism and International Criminal Justice’. This two day event will consist of a lecture on ‘Global Legal Pluralism’ by Professor Paul Schiff Berman on Thursday 10th, followed by a roundtable discussion on Friday 11th, with the Professor and other legal professionals. These will include Frédéric Mégret (McGill University), Lachezar Yanev (Tilburg University), Alex Green (University of Hong Kong), Jen Hendry (University of Leeds) and Ilaria Zavoli (University of Leeds).
Professor Berman (George Washington University) and the other panelists will be debating the following topics:
- Legal pluralism and cosmopolitanism
- Extraterritorial and universal jurisdiction, and more practical issues that come with trying international crimes domestically
- Trials in absentia
- Jury trials and how to work in a legal-pluralist environment.
Admission to the event will be free, although registration is required. Professor Berman’s lecture will be held in the G.32, Liberty Building whilst
the remainder of the conference will take place in the Moot Court (1.28).
